Beekeepers

Beekeepers tend to vary greatly in methods used to care for their bees. What they do have in common is a love for the bees and their work.

  • Some try to avoid using miticides or other chemicals on the hives. This has been shown to reduce damage done to bee health.

    • Integrated pest management techniques (IPM) are often more encouraged over the use of chemicals

    • The use of miticides over a long time can strengthen the pests resistance and disrupt the pest host relationship

  • They can avoid feeding bees sucrose or HFCS for this can result in inadequate nutrition.

    • for every beehive, one acre of forage is needed to support the bees nutritionally.

    • By situating a beehive in a pollen diverse and pollen rich area this can allow for less cases of starvation.

  • It is advantageous to take advantage of beekeeping resources and know other beekeepers in the area.
